Ms
I appreciate all the information on bunads you provide. Maybe you can help us. We have ancesters from the Romerike and Hadeland areas. We want to make bunads to wear to the Romerike lag but are overwhelmed with the Romerike bunad. What would you recommend? Is there a "work" or more casual bunad we could make? Thank you so much. Dorothy Mehl

Mrs.
I found your site and thought it was wonderful. I am of Norwegian heritage and am looking for a bunad or festival outfit for my grand daughter(8.) I do not read Norwegian unfortunately so am having difficulty. Do you have any suggestions for a source for me to find one?

Translation of names of the flowers embroidered on the Fjellbygdbunad
Hi Laila,
I did a little research and came up with the following English and latin names for the flowers on the Fjellbygdbunad. It's probably best if you look up pictures of the flowers using the names - just to confirm that they are the right ones! I'm not so familiar with Norwegian flower names!
Reinrose - Dryas octopetala - common names include Mountain Avens, White Dryas, and White Dryad
Mogop - Anemone vernalis) - Spring Pasqueflower
Snøsildre - Saxifraga nivalis - commonly called Snow Saxifrage or (ambiguously) Alpine Saxifrage
Rypebær - Arctostaphylos alpines - Alpine Bearberry (apparently very rare)
I am currently working on the embroidery for the collar, cuffs and bringelister for a men's bunadskjorte from the Hardanger region. I intend to wear it with a neck scarf with my tuxedo. I've bought some octagonal silver Rogaland buttons and cufflinks to wear with it. I know this isn't really correct, but then I'm not even Norwegian! I just love your beautiful bunader! In fact, I have a feeling that I will eventually end up with a full bunad!
Sincerely, Dennis Bach Jensen

The Hallingdal bunad at least around the GOL area is charracterized by the fact that there is NO waist. The cloth flows to the ground from the bust line. The local joke is that once a woman owns this bunad, usually in their late teens, you can no longer tell how large she becomes,(read that as fat) or if she is pregnant at the time of marriage! !

Hvit Dovrebunad

Question
I have one question :-) ... and that's about solje . I know 'solje" (I hope I didn't make a mistake in this word) is traditional silver jewellery . Does using this have any special meaning? Is it a part of bunad? For what ocassions Norwegians give/get/use it? Please, if you could write something about it :)

Kjaerlig Hilsener ifra California
Det var vidunderlig til a se min kusine's vakre Lier Bunad. Strand var moren mins jomfrunavn og jeg har besoket Willy og Ruth Strand i Lier mange ganger. Kjaerlig hilsener ifra California. Nydelig bilder! Gode minner om Norge!

Waltersdatter
I made a renaissance dress similar to a bunad. The burgandy vest is attached to the dark rose skirt. Would it be appropriate to wear as a 'folk' dress when my cousins wear their bunads or are the colors just too different? Thanks, Chris

Bunad owner
I was so excited to find your web page. I own a bunad just like the one in the photos and was trying to identify it. My maternal grandparents were born in Norway. I inherited the bunad from my aunt. She bought it at Steen & Strom on a trip to Norway in 1950. Unfortunatley it is too small for me. Do you know if you can still purchase this style of bunad from the store? And how much would it cost? Sincerely, Mitty

Villblomsten, du kan jo prøva å søkja på "bunad" i Biletsamlinga til Lokalhistorisk Arkiv i Fusa: http://www.fusa.kommune.no/default.asp?PageID=952

Dr
Hi, thanks for this fantastic and informative site. My 11 year old (6th grade) daughter had to do a speach on the traditional folk constumes of one country. We chose Norway, and your site provided all the info we needed. Thanks again. Lovely costumes! Best wishes Estie
